How We Met

We met in February of 2010 through a Discovery Church small group. Her first thoughts? “He’s cute. And smart.” His first thoughts? “She played the bass this morning, I don’t know anything about music, but she seems interesting, I want to meet her.” That night, which also happened to be Valentine’s Day, we went out to Buffalo Wild Wings with some friends. Soon after, we began going to ECU baseball games with friends and that became almost routine. We continued to hang out with mutual friends and finally, only about 2 weeks after we met, Jess had to text him to let him know that she liked him. His response? “I like you too, I can’t wait to see what this means for us.”   Shortly after that, he asked her out to coffee on a rainy Tuesday evening and we sat beside a strange man reading the newspaper in a crowded Starbucks while we joked about the styles of different preachers.  Just a few weeks later we became official after an Indiana Jones movie.

The Proposal

We dated and grew closer together and first talked about marriage early that fall. While we both were on the same page, it wasn’t going to be possible for another year or more due to new jobs, finishing school, and other factors. This is why Jess was completely surprised by the proposal on May 14, 2011!  Josh suggested a beach trip to Nags Head, which was nothing really out of the ordinary. Josh had suggested we visit the Whalebone Yacht Club, a historic site, for nothing more than what I thought was a sweet consideration of my love for history. Turns out, that was the orginal place he had planned to propose! However, after stopping at the Welcome Center, I saw a brochure for the Elizabethan Gardens and convinced Josh to go. I was still completely clueless when we pulled in. There was only one moment where I thought something might be up and that was when Josh grabbed his backpack. He never takes a backpack on trips which made me think “huh, wouldn’t it be cool if there was a ring in there?” but I dismissed the thought about as quickly as it came. We walked through the gardens and came upon a beautiful garden with a fountain in the middle. I stopped to take a picture but was hurried down to the fountain by Josh who took my hands and said, “Jess you know I love you…” and got down on one knee and proposed. The tears didn’t really come until after he had given me the ring and then read some scripture from a Bible. He then proceeded to tell me that the Bible was mine because I would need a Bible with a blank cover since my old Bible had my old last name on it.

Where We Are Now

We got married in June 2012 and have had a great year figuring out this whole marriage thing. Josh is currently working for Carolina Donor Services and I am figuring out my new job as stay at home mom for our little boy, Judah.
