Dynamic Teaching

Jess made it on the news last night!  We were at Barnes and Noble to see ECU alumni and dynamic teacher, Ron Clark speak about his new book, and while we were there, Jess was interviewed by our local news station about dynamic teaching styles and being an educator in Pitt County.

Here’s the interview:

A Well Disciplined Man

My high school band teacher used to say, “when you can discipline yourself in the small things, you can be disciplined in the big things”.  I have been blessed to have found a man who lives that out. I see it in many different ways. The first one I noticed, even before we were dating, is Josh’s discipline in spending time in the Word and in prayer. It’s a huge blessing for a girl who loves to read but has always struggled to keep a regular quiet time. He never tried to get me to do the same thing or even asked about my devotional habits,  but because I got to see what he did, with great joy, I began to admire it, then want it, then feel like I could do the same.

Another thing I see is how he makes deliberate efforts to make me feel loved and beautiful. Just check out the card I got yesterday – for no reason 🙂

It’s amazing that I have a man who honors me so well. He takes the time to genuinely compliment me, to look out for me, and even works on things that are not always easy — like learning to listen and not try to always fix things. He also makes sure that even if I’m being an emotional crazy person, he never makes me feel like my feelings are dumb. People sometimes say that these things will wane as our relationship goes on — I’m more convinced that they will actually get better 🙂

Pulling on Church Doors

As part of searching for places to have our wedding, Josh and I have learned to be bold and just start pulling on doors — literally.  Funny how simple reconnaissance missions has enabled us to be a part of some really cool stories.

Take the last “Community Battlefield” we did with Discovery Church. Our group was walking through a fairly rough neighborhood in Winterville, NC when we stumbled on a little church tucked in a back corner. The purpose of our walk was to try and see where God was already working, why not a church? Since Josh and I had so much experience, I didn’t hesitate as we walked up and pulled on a church door. He and I went in and the pastor, Pastor Cooper, happened to be inside. We were able to talk to him about what we were doing and to pray for his services. Because of that connection, he and Jason are working together to reach more of Pastor Cooper’s neighborhood with the good news.

Or when Josh and I went to Ocracoke and ran across a small Methodist church one day while we were exploring in the rain. Once again, we pulled on a church door and walked in. There was no one inside but it was really nice to sit in the quiet, a chance to reflect with my soon to be husband.

I don’t know how many more doors I’ll have to pull open in my life but I’ve learned something — if I can be bold to pull on a door in faith, I can do other things in faith too!
